Overcoming U Mindful Wellness Speaking Series

Start with this trilogy to cover the mindful wellness basics and help your employees jumpstart long-term change.
Overcoming U 101:
Wellness Consciousness
In order to effectively take charge of your health, you must create awareness and self-responsibility.  This becomes your wellness consciousness.  We blame and assign responsibility to other parties for our health: doctors, employers, family members even genetics.  Learn key factors to taking better care of yourself and optimizing opportunities for caring for yourself.
Overcoming U 201:
Behavior Change
We get very fired up to reach new goals (or retrying old goals).  Go us!  We start strong with then flame out fairly quickly.  The key to achieving our goals is changing our underlying behavior.  Our actions and behaviors are determined by a myriad of factors.  We must address these factors to effectively change our behaviors.

Overcoming U 301:
Goal Setting
Creating a vague goals around our health and wellness is a major obstacle to improving your lifestyle.  "Losing weight" or "Working out more" doesn't give us enough specificity and direction to follow through.  Walk through the process of creating attainable goals, evaluating your progress and duplicating your success in other realms of your life.

Is Stress Eating Your Corporate Culture?
Using Mindfulness to Manage Stress & Weight
Turning to food when we are overwhelmed and under stress is a cultural norm. Unfortunately, it creates more overwhelm and more stress (outgrowing our pants is overwhelmingly stressful!). Our corporate cultures can be a safe haven for stress eating and further encourage our reliance on food. Consciously creating a mindful eating environment and effectively dealing with our stress creates confidence, peace and better health.

Do We Ever Really NEED a Donut?
How and Why Behavior Affects Our Wellness
Why does our sabotaging behavior trump our best intentions for health?  If you truly want to lay out a successful wellness strategy, you have to really understand how and why behavior affects our health and wellness.  You can have the best spreadsheet strategy but if you aren't directly addressing people's behavior, it will not be successful.  Creating a mindful wellness culture focused on Education, Engagement and Environment produces a strategy for long-lasting behavior change. Sick of Hiding Your Secret Stress Eating?
Five Steps to Finally Free Yourself from Emotional Eating
We eat when we are not hungry because we are anxious, angry, bored, sad, lonely, etc. Unfortunately, the food doesn't deal with our emotions and creates shame, embarrassment and guilt for us. Stop the cycle of reacting to stress with food. Learn effective coping techniques to deal with the stressors of your life. Create space in your life for something greater than thinking about food!

Too Broke to Pay Attention?
Overcome the Distraction of Worry, Stress and Burnout
Mental distractions are a well-documented safety risk. Worry, stress and burnout affect our ability to focus on tasks at hand. Pushing away thoughts is not an effective long-term strategy. Clearing our minds is a learned skillset. We become more mindful at work by learning to cope with our everyday stressors: finances, arguments, kids, divorce, aging parents, addiction, etc. Having better coping skills allows us to handle stress and worry immediately so we can get back to work. Rolling these strategies into our safety programming can create a more holistic and powerful approach to paying attention at work.

Create Your Coping Toolkit:
Rise from Surviving to Thriving

We face a bombardment of loss and change in our personal lives and at work.  When we don’t effectively cope, we eat too much, we drink too much, we buy too much, we watch TV too much, etc.  The lack of positive coping techniques can cause us to become less satisfied with our lives,  experience less stress and neglect our health and well being.  Create a coping toolkit shares practical tools that promote resiliency and good health.

Better than Resolutions:
Behavior Change that Sticks
We get very fired up to reach new goals (or retrying old goals). Go us! We start strong with then flame out fairly quickly. The key to achieving our goals is changing our underlying behavior. Understanding how our behavior works and what elements are necessary to effectively create long-term changes will stack the deck in our favor to make meaningful changes.

The Art of Finding Hope:
Hope & Healing Aren't Under the Couch Cushions
Tragically in 2010, Heather's ex-boyfriend killed himself in her personal training studio. After the traumatic incident, she turned to art for healing. The silence and focus of the artistic process abated the anger and stilled her mind, allowing her to find peace. As well as art, she turned to two more pivotal practices that brought her out of depression and PTSD. This engaging talk was presented at TEDxTempe 2012.

Create Your Hero's Journey:
Transform Your Pain to Power
I tell my personal story and how I used the Hero's Journey to change my life. I was a single mother with a failing business, loss of life savings to felony financial scam, house in foreclosure, no credit and only $50 cash to spend on groceries for my sons. Their was a defining moment that I said no to my circumstances, quit blaming, stopped pouting and said yes to my role as the hero of my life. My heroic energy shifts transformed my pain into power and changed my outer world.

Who's Laughing Now?
Using Humor & Positivity to Combat Stress
When the poo hits the fan sometimes the only thing we have left is humor. Positive psychology tells us that adding humor promotes resilience and acts as an effective coping mechanism. It can help us avoid turning to our vices like eating, smoking, drinking, shopping, etc. when stress hits. Find balance in dealing with your situation and still keeping joy and light in your life.  Learn to use humor to cope in a positive way.
